Q1 2022 – Investments in plant-based technologies

In 2021, approximately $1.93 Billion USD was invested into Plant-based alternative protein companies worldwide. In the first quarter (Q1) of 2022, there have been 35 investments into plant-based meat, dairy & egg companies across 18 countries totaling $477.5M USD:

1. Redefine Meat, an Israeli plant-based beef company, raised $135 million in a Series B investment round in January 2022. Investors include Hanaco Venture Capital (Lead Investor) & Synthesis Capital (Lead Investor).
2. Next Gen Foods, a plant-based chicken company based in Singapore, raised $100 million in a Series A investment round in February 2022. Investors include Temasek Holdings, Bits x Bites, K3 Ventures, Alpha JWC Ventures, EDBI, GGV Capital & MPL Ventures.
3. Starfield (aka Starfield Food Science & Technology), a Chinese plant-based meat company, raised $100 million in a Series B investment round in January 2022. Investors include Primavera Capital Group (Lead Investor), Joy Capital, Sky9 Capital, Matrix Partners China, Lightspeed China Partners & Ming Zeng.
4. La Vie, a plant-based pork company based in France, raised $28.36 million in a Series A investment round in January 2022. Investors include Seventure Partners (Lead Investor), Natalie Portman, Entrepreneur First, Oyster Bay, Capagro, Partech, Bleu Capital, Thomas Plantenga, Thibaud Hug de Larauze, Frédéric Mazzella & Eric Melloul.

In total, the top 5 countries make up 88.5% of all investments into plant-based alternative protein companies or $422.76 Million, while the rest of the world received $54.722 in investment or 11.5% of the total investment. Israel received the most investment into plant-based companies in Q1 2022 receiving $155.45 Million USD or 32.6% of total investment into plant-based alternative protein companies.
