Q1 2022 – Investments in cultivated technologies

In 2021, approximately $1.4 Billion USD was invested into cultivated technology companies worldwide. In the first quarter (Q1) of 2022, there have been 11 investments into cultivated companies ($USD):

1. Wildtype, a cultivated salmon start-up based in the US, raised $100 million in a Series B investment round in February 2022. Investors include L Catterton (Lead investor), Leonardo DiCaprio, Cargill, S2G Ventures, FootPrint Coalition, Bezos Expeditions, Temasek Holdings, CRV and Spark Capital.
2. Finless Foods, a cultivated tuna company from the US, raised $34 million in a Series B funding round in March 2022. Investors include Hanwha Solutions (Lead investor), Dainichi, At One Ventures, Olive Tree Capital, IndieBio, Humboldt Fund, Gaingels, Sand Hill Angels, Draper Associates, Sustainable Ocean Alliance, Justin Kan and SOSV.
3. Stämm Biotech, an Argentinian producer of 3-D printing bioreactors, raised $17 million in a Series A funding round in March 2022. Investors include Varana Capital (lead investor), SOSV, Draper Associates, Draper Cygnus, Grid Exponential, Decarbonization Consortium, New Abundance, Dragones VC, Teramips Technologies, Vista Equity Partners, VistaEnergy, Trillian and Serenity Traders.
4. NewCo, a newly formed Israeli cultivated meat company, started jointly by The Tnuva Group & Pluristem, raised $7.5 million in February 2022. Investors include The Tnuva Group.

5. IntegriCulture, a Japanese cultivated meat company, raised $7 million in a Series B funding round in January 2022. Investors include AgFunder, Beyond Next Ventures, Future Food Fund, Iyogin Capital, Resona Capital, Real Tech Japan, Kemuri Ventures, Plan Do See Inc., SuMi TRUST Innovation Fund and  Yamaguchi Capital.
6. Seawith, a South Korean cultivated beef company, raised $5.43 million in a Series A funding round in February 2022. Investors include Mint Venture Partners.
7. Umami Meats, a Singapore-based cultivated seafood company, raised $2.4 million in a Pre-seed funding round in March 2022. Investors include Better Bite Ventures, Genedant, CULT Food Science, Prithvi Ventures, Impact Venture Capital, Katapult Ocean, Venture for America, The Yield Lab Asia Pacific, Plug and Play Asia Pacific and Plug and Play Tech Center.
8. CellulaREvolution, a UK cultivated meat company, raised $1.9 Million in a Pre-Series A funding round in February 2022. Investors include Happiness Capital (Lead Investor) and Allusion One.
9. Jellatech, a US cultivated collagen and gelatin company, received funding from CULT Food Science Corp in January 2022.
10. California Cultured, a US cultivated chocolate company, received investment from Blue Horizon in February 2022.
11. California Cultured, a US cultivated chocolate company, received a second investment in 2022 CULT Food Science Corp, also in February 2022.
In total, $175 Million USD has been invested into cultivated technology companies in Q1 2022.  

More recently, Upside Foods raised $400 Million USD in a Series C funding round in April 2022. Given the number of large cultivated investments at the start of 2022, It is highly likely that cultivated technology companies by the end of 2022 will have received far more investment than they have received in any year prior.
